The kids are almost out of school and it’s an invasion, but we’ve got décor tips that should minimize the whirlwind!
During the school year, the kids… well, they’re in school. In other words, they’re not at home, making a mess.
Come summer, they’re running in and out of the house at high speed, dropping water, sand, dirt and who knows what else on their way to the bathroom, the refrigerator or to get that all important toys from their rooms.

These are good things, but at the same time, keeping up a beautiful home during summer induced chaos isn’t easy. There are a few things you can do to help keep things under control!
Preparing Your Home For The Summer Tip #1: Get Your Mudroom Organized
We talked about ‘Creating The Perfect Mudroom” a few weeks back so be sure to give that another read but let’s get specific for summer:
- Clean out all the winter stuff – hats, – mittens, boots – and store it all in bins, to be put away until next fall.
- Use every available space in your mudroom. Have a spare corner? It’s typically the most underutilized space in a room! A corner shelf will give you the extra storage you need for things like bug spray, sunblock, beach towels, stray sunglasses and hats!
- Make sure there are plenty of hooks for hats and baseball caps. Maybe one that’s JUST for the kids? No adults allowed with this rack:

Preparing Your Home For The Summer Tip #2: Get Your Kitchen Under Control
Besides making room in the freezer for a ton of popsicles and freezies, you can keep surfaces uncluttered and easy to clean.
Incorporating easy to wipe down surfaces makes tidying up a snap when the troops have been through on their search for a snack and left their prints all over. Kitchen island / bar stools made with plastic seats are ideal for when wet bathing suits are being worn all the live long day.
Preparing Your Home For The Summer Tip #3: Make Your Deck Into Another Room
Barring stormy weather, keeping the kids busy outside instead of inside, staring at screens, means that your deck can be another room of your house. Better still, it’s a ‘room’ that comes with its own ‘natural’ decor.

Bring comfort outdoors with gorgeous outdoor furniture so that the kids have no reason to be inside: they can read, color, play, create forts, have outdoor movie night and create wonderful memories that will last a lifetime! For you, the memories will perhaps be enhanced by a free standing hammock?
!nspire Tip: If you want to keep the kids from raiding the fridge all weekend long, consider putting a cooler outside on the deck. You can fill it with snacks and cool drinks, avoiding the footprint path from the back door to the refrigerator!
Let’s not forget the other ‘big kids’ in all this organizing and decorating: shatterproof ‘glassware’ – that looks like glass but isn’t – is perfect for outdoor entertaining and barbecuing.
Get ready for summer so that you can spend it outside with friends and family, enjoying beautiful weather and good times.
