How To Choose The Right Kitchen Stool

November 14, 2014 by whm-blog-admin Leave a Comment

Are you ready for a kitchen stool upgrade? It may be harder than you think. Luckily, we’re here to walk you through it!

When it comes to choosing the right kitchen stool, you’re probably thinking, “How hard can it be?”

The truth is, it’s easy to make the wrong choice, especially with the overwhelming amount of options to choose from.

Just because something is “trendy” or “in style” doesn’t mean it’s right for your space.

Consider these !nspire tips before reaching for your wallet.

Kitchen Stool Upgrade Tip #1: Comfort & Style

Style and comfort are key.

Style and comfort are key.

Whether you’re searching online or browsing in a local department store, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trend over comfort (we all do it—no matter what type of furniture we’re looking for). But remember, the best kitchen stools combine comfort and style.

There are many trendy stools that look perfect for your space, but end up hurting your back. That is not what we call the perfect stool!

Our advice? Never be embarrassed to try out a kitchen stool for 15 minutes at a time. It may seem odd to make yourself comfortable in a department store, but if you’re using the stool for the next five years, you should make sure it’s enjoyable.

If you prefer shopping online, read as many reviews as you can before you buy. People are usually candid in their online reviews, so take them into consideration.

As for style, that’s completely up to you.

Always factor in your existing design scheme and find something that compliments your sense of style. It’s never a bad idea to take a photo of your kitchen with you when you shop, along with paint and wallpaper swatches for extra support.

Kitchen Stool Upgrade Tip #2: Sizing & Dimension

Consider how you’ll use your kitchen stools.

Will they be tucked under your counter or kitchen island, or stay lined up against the wall for extra seating?

Consider the following dimensions:

  • There should be approximately a 9”-12” area between your seat and table surface
  • Standard kitchen counters are approximately 36”

Measure the height of your kitchen island or counter before you shop and take a tape measure with you when you hit the stores.

After you’ve determined the height, you must determine width. How many stools will fit across your counter or kitchen island?

To find out, measure your surface length and divide it by the width of your stool, adding at least five inches of proper spacing in between.

The equation looks like this: Amount of stools = Bar length / (Width of stool + 5 inches)

Even if math isn’t your forte, measuring for size and dimensions is important. There’s nothing worse than getting home with the stools of your kitchen dreams, only to find out they don’t fit.

Our Instagram friend, Lise Veillette, measured perfectly, creating a gorgeous space for breakfast for two.

Kitchen Stool Upgrade Tip #3: Stability & Safety

Examining the structure of your stool isn’t the first thing that comes to mind, but if you have kids, stability is something to think about.

Look for a stool with a wide, resistant base and examine its structure: the wider the base, the sturdier the stool.

Four-legged stools like the Renfrew Adjustable Stool are obviously a sturdier design; safer for the kids, while more contemporary designs like this Contour Counter Stool may work better in a home without kids.

Whichever style you choose, take a few minutes to examine its wobble-resistance so you can enjoy a safe seating experience every time.
