Just because you live in a small space doesn’t mean you can’t make it beautiful. Here are 5 small-space decorating rules you need to break today!
Do you live in a tight studio apartment or 1-bedroom flat? If so, we guarantee you’ve read every article out there about specific décor rules you have to follow to maximize your space—are we right?
Well, today we’re ditching the pre-conceived notions about small spaces and thinking outside the box!
Here are 5 small-space decorating rules you need to break right now:
Small-Space Decorating Rule #1: “Don’t Use Dark Colors”
“Don’t use dark colors” is the #1 decorating rule we see in blogs and magazines for those living in small apartments or flats—and we think it’s complete nonsense!
Sure, lighter shades and bright neutrals like white and beige are easy ways to open up your space and make it appear larger, but if lighter shades don’t suit your style, you’ll never be happy with your space.
When used properly, deep hues can actually enhance the architectural features of your home.
We love the idea of painting the walls one shade, like a dark blue, and painting the ceiling a dramatic contrast of deep red. We found this great example from agirlandagluegun.com!

The rich juxtaposition gives the room dimension and creates depth that makes your space feel bigger. It’s a daring move that makes a bold statement. You only live once, so why not take the plunge and do something dramatic?
Small-Space Decorating Rule #2: “Avoid Using Prints”
Avoid using prints? That’s what décor nightmares are made of!
Every space needs a beautiful print or two, even a small space.
We do agree that it’s not wise to overwhelm an entire small space with several contrasting patterns – that would just be confusing. But one all-over pattern actually draws the eye up and around a small space, adding interest that distracts from how tiny it is.
If all-over pattern still feels overwhelming to you, there’s no reason you can’t use prints in your favorite accent pieces, like the Avery Storage Bench in Grey.
The funky pattern of this bench is playful yet neutral enough to marry with any décor; it even pops open and acts as a space saver to stash magazines, remotes and extra throws.
Small-Space Decorating Rule #3: “You Can’t Have a Dining Space”
While it’s true you might not be able to create a grand dining room with an 8-foot table and 6 luxurious chairs, you can still create a modest dining vignette in your small space. You just have to be creative!
Opting for a high-standing corner table with two bar stools is a great option if you have limited space.
We also love the idea of a two-in-one vignette like the Apollo 3PC Table Set.
Besides a spot to sit and eat, it also has tiered shelving; perfect for storing wine glasses, dishes and even a microwave up top. You can scoot up and eat breakfast by day, and gather round with wine and hors d’oeuvres by night.
Small-Space Decorating Rule #4: “Minimize Accessories and Collections
If you have a minimalist style, you won’t mind the hyper-organization of tidy shelves and bare coffee tables, but for those of us who like displaying accessories and collections, working with a small space can be tough.
Rather than throw away your favorite trinkets and treasures, you need to get creative about how you display them so you don’t overwhelm the eye.
A tabletop tray is a great place to start because it contains your décor accessories without them looking messy or unorganized.
Shelves are fair game too; just make sure you take the time to edit your collection down and try not to clutter the small space with too many contrasting accents.
For instance, if you love plants, use one section of your space to display your favorites. Let them speak for themselves instead of mixing them with other accessories.
Small-Space Decorating Rule #5: “Don’t Use Heavy Drapes”
A bare window makes a room feel larger—fact or myth?
It’s a myth!
Bare windows do nothing to make a room feel larger or more stylish; in fact, tailored window treatments (especially if hung close to the ceiling) is what makes a window and room feel taller and more spacious.
Are you dealing with odd windows in your small space? We wrote a blog on Treatments For Every Window (yes, even those pesky basement apartment windows) here!
Which small-space decorating rule do you plan on breaking? We hope we’ve !nspired you to embrace your small space and live beautiful—no matter what your style is!
