3 Easy Steps to Organizing Your Home Office

October 31, 2014 by whm-blog-admin Leave a Comment

Your home office should !nspire productivity, not become the landing zone for boxes and household junk. Use these smart tricks for decluttering your home office and you’ll never feel overwhelmed again!

A new season carries with it a new hope of organizing your house.

First come the closets, then the bedrooms, and finally the living room. If you’re lucky, the kitchen gets tidied with your last ounce of energy (!)

But there’s always that one room that never quite makes the organizational cut; the one that gets piled up with old boxes and junk: Your home office (often referred to as ‘the storage room’!)

Whether you work from home or solely use your desktop for surfing the net, creating an organized workspace has a direct effect on your stress levels and productivity.

Consider these organizational tips to make your home office a little more functional.

Home Office Organization Tip #1: Start With The Desk

If you’re just using your desk to pay bills or shop online, choose something small.

There’s no need to go overboard with storage or unneeded drawers. Extra nooks could create opportunity for more clutter. In this instance, it’s best to keep it simple.

However, if you do any kind of work at your desk, you need room to maneuver, and more importantly, room to store.

Find a desk with at least a few drawers, as loose papers, bills, receipts and files can pile up quickly with no destination.

Many new desks come with drawers set up for organization, and if all else fails, dividers and organizational trays are always an option.

If space is an issue, we suggest the Vista Desk Console. It has an easy pivot design for simple switch from workstation to console, with room for plenty of storage and display.

Home Office Organization Tip #2: Decluttering Is Key

Now that you’ve chosen an appropriate desk, it’s time to deal with all of the clutter that doesn’t belong in the office.

Before you start storing these items, go through them and toss what you don’t need. This can be a painstaking process but you’ll feel lighter and more organized when it’s done.

Minimize the knick-knacks and extras around your desk to revive your workspace.

Take a look around and pinpoint the distractions. Are the dog’s toys lying around? Has this space become the landing zone for dirty laundry and that old vacuum you’ve been meaning to fix? Now is the time to address these eyesores once and for all.

If you have no choice but to store extras in your office, conceal them in modern storage bins and line them up nicely on a vertical bookshelf or a horizontal floating shelf. This creates a refreshing, streamlined look ideal for an office space.

If there are too many extras to deal with, consider having a yard sale or donating items. You’ll be glad you did.

Now, we totally understand that this is probably the toughest part of the job. But it’s also the most critical. We have a favourite resource we turn to when it comes to decluttering and keeping the mess under control: http://www.flylady.net/

Home Office Organization Tip #3: Blending Your Home Office

Although a utilitarian workspace, your home office is still an extension of your home and should feel as such.

If your house is filled with rustic décor and nature-inspired elements, carry the vibe into your office with plants, a natural fiber rug and calming water features.

If your style is more modern, incorporate a sleek office chair and chrome shelving.

Incorporate your personal style into your home office.

Perhaps your home office doubles as a homework and hangout area for the kids, in which case you may want to cozy it up with a loveseat and large coffee table for after-school group projects/gossip sessions.

No matter your style, your home office should !nspire the creativity and motivation to conquer any challenges thrown your way.
