Is Your Décor Stressing You Out? 5 Décor No-No’s And Quick Fixes

Is your home décor stressing you out? These 5 décor no-no’s might be the problem…

Embarking on a room makeover is always fun—in the beginning; then come the decor hiccups that make you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing.

Don’t be so hard on yourself! Even the most seasoned interior designers run into obstacles along the way.

However if your home décor is making you feel more frustrated than fabulous, it might be time to take a closer look at why, and what you can do to turn things around…

Décor No-No #1: Too Many Throw Pillows

While a few extra pillows can make your bed or sofa feel cozier, the sheer volume of these billowy accents can overwhelm the eye and your space.

More often than not, these stunning accents end up strewn on the floor, making your space feel messier than it is.

With so many gorgeous prints, styles and fabrics, it’s easy to go overboard with pillows, but the best way to ease your home décor stress is to use your best editing skills.

Instead of choosing 8 pillows you like, choose 2-3 pillows you love. It’s an easy way to streamline any room and it forces you to choose accents that truly speak to you.

Décor No-No #2: Mismatched Dinnerware

Cooking the perfect meal for your family and friends is stressful enough; you don’t need the threat of mismatched dinnerware wreaking havoc on your home décor!

This décor no-no might not seem dire, but when it comes down to streamlining your style, it’s best to choose dinnerware pieces that match and complement each other.

Mismatched pieces distract the eye; matching pieces create a cohesive dining look you can be proud of.

!nspire tip: We love the idea of pairing crisp white dinnerware atop the Frankfurt Dining Table in Stainless Steel with complementing silver napkins. Can you say chic?

Décor No-No #3: Your Rooms Are Too Bold

We have many clients with an aversion to bold prints and colors; and while there’s nothing wrong with going bold, it’s easy to go overboard.

Although you might be drawn to eye-catching hues like red or orange, their bold impact can actually make you feel more stressed.

There are 2 things you can do to combat this:

  • Go bold in smaller doses; for example, paint 1 accent wall red instead of the entire room, or choose accent pieces with bold prints like the Zuda Accent Chair.

  • Choose calming paint colors like blue and white to bring a peaceful quality to your décor scheme. Blue has been shown to reduce blood pressure and make you feel sleepy, making it an ideal color choice for the bedroom.

Décor No-No #4: Your Bookshelves Are Cluttered

It’s a proven fact that cluttered homes = increased levels of stress hormones; that’s why it’s imperative to limit the amount of clutter in your space, especially on bookshelves where it’s on display for all to see.

How do your bookshelves measure up?

If there’s no cohesive rhyme or reason for how you’ve displayed your books and trinkets, it’s time to put your editing skills to the test.

Our advice?

  • Choose a theme: Themes are a foolproof way to keep your accessories organized. If it doesn’t fit the theme, remove it!
  • Go minimal: The less clutter on your shelves, the better. Choose your very best pieces opposed to a bunch you “kinda” like.
  • Keep it simple: If you have no idea what to display on your bookshelves, why not just go with books? Try stacking them vertically for a unique look.

Décor No-No #5: You’ve Chosen Style Over Comfort

Is it really worth it to have a beautiful sofa if you can’t sit on it for more than 5 minutes without a backache? Or maybe it’s stark white and you’re afraid to relax on it without getting it dirty.

While you might love your showcase-esque living room, you should be able to relax comfortably on your furniture to be able to enjoy it. If you can’t, you’re likely feeling a little stressed.

At !nspire, we’re all about infusing comfort and style.

For instance, the Ryder Accent Chair in Distressed Blue is one of our favorite pieces that does just that. It sports retro styling with a plush cushion and moveable head rest for maximum comfort.

Remember: Style is important, but without comfort, your space isn’t liveable!
