How to Design a Relaxing Retreat

Designing a relaxing retreat is about choosing the right decor…

Sure the ‘showroom look’ is beautiful: crisp cream couches, shiny glass tables and luxurious textiles—we’re all about contemporary!

But have you ever noticed something missing? Many of these gorgeous rooms don’t look touchable, never mind livable.

We love spaces that look fabulous but also fit our routine. Because what’s the point of a beautiful room if all you can do is look at it?

In your quest for style, comfort should never fall by the wayside. And today we’re talking about how to combine style and comfort so you can get the relaxation you deserve without inducing DEFCON 1 panic every time chocolate milk spills on the sofa.

Relaxing Design Tip #1: Calming Colors

Decor colours for relaxation

Have you ever noticed the most relaxing rooms are painted in soft colors like mossy green, dusty lilac, powder blue or muted taupe? That’s because these colors are proven to induce relaxation.

Studies show that blue literally reduces your heartbeat and blood pressure whereas green is the most restful color to look at.

This is great news for people who have subtle taste, but what about those whose taste is bold?

If you’re not keen on painting an entire room in one soft color, why not try one wall? Or, if you do go soft all over, accessorize with bold statement pillows and throws. It’s all about finding a balance that works for you.

Artwork, textured rugs and accent furniture can incorporate soft, muted colors into your space in an impactful way. Colorful tones will add to the energy of the room while natural tones will help you take it down a notch.

Relaxing Design Tip #2: Bring Nature into Your Home

relaxing decor tips

Did you know that going for a walk in the forest or even viewing a forest will reduce your blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels? It’s true! When it comes to home décor, the more natural elements you can incorporate into your space, the easier it will be to relax.

Our advice? Keep fresh flowers in your space to ignite your senses and bring a smile to your face. Flowers can instantly improve your mood, not just because of how beautiful they are, but also because of their wonderful smell (lilacs and peonies are our favorites!)

If you have a green thumb, celebrate with lots of greenery, artfully arranged. Make sure that you use matching containers and keep your plants well-trimmed.

You might also be surprised at how light plays a role in how you feel. Many of us think calming spaces have to be dark and dimly lit, but opening the blinds (especially with this gorgeous summer sunshine) is a proven way to make you feel happier and refreshed.

We mentioned above how green is easy on the eyes. What is it about nature that makes you feel relaxed? Is it the scents? The sounds? Maybe it’s simply the greenery around you… Take those elements and find a creative way to infuse them in your space. We promise it will work wonders.

Relaxing Design Tip #3: Add Cozy Couches

Inviting furniture and pretty accent chairs are a must-have for any (stylish) relaxing retreat, but if you can’t get comfortable in them, they’re not doing their job.

Unfortunately many people still associate comfort with the ratty old recliner in the corner. The good news is comfort can be found in fabulous pieces these days, and you can live beautiful if you make the right selection.

Our favorite pick for comfort and style is the Alicia Club Chair With Ottoman In Black. Its cushioned rolled arms, slight wing back and bucket-style seating provide hours of comfort as you immerse yourself in your favorite book; the perfect accent piece for your relaxing space.
