Call it ‘modern rustic’. Call it ‘contemporary simple’. Whatever you call it, furniture made from distressed or reclaimed wood is gorgeous, sustainable and provides an organic, natural focal point in any room of the house.

It is easy to picture a family sitting around a large barn board harvest table for the holidays or just for dinner. The table is not just a table. It’s the location of family and friends coming together, enjoying each other’s company, toasting the successes and lamenting the losses. That calls for a table worthy of the role!

What’s The Difference Between Distressed And Reclaimed Wood?

Once the domain of flooring specialists, reclaimed wood is as its name suggests: lumber that is reclaimed from old structures, barns, warehouses and so on. It is used to manufacture any number of beautiful pieces of furniture, from bed frames and side tables to dining tables and benches.

Distressed wood is typically a hardwood that is artificially or sometimes quite naturally distressed so that it gives the appearance of rusticity. Distressed wood is intended to look weathered and aged, even though the piece might be relatively new in construction.

Sustainable Mango Wood For Distressed Pieces

Mango wood is a comparably hard wood with dense and very beautiful grain, that is cultivated at sustainable plantations for, among many purposes, the construction of quality furniture.

Thanks to its durability and resistance to water staining, mango wood can withstand a little abuse with minimal upkeep, making it the ideal material for those high traffic pieces like dining and coffee tables.

The wood itself is easily grown, compared to oak for example, with a tree reaching maturity in fifteen or twenty years, versus the one hundred years it can take for an oak tree to grow. At their full height, they cannot be used for the cultivation of fruit, so they are harvested and replaced with new trees. This allows for the sustainable cultivation of the wood and a reasonable livelihood for those who engage with it.

Reclaimed Wood For Individuality

Reclaimed wood furniture is basically one of a kind and should be the focal point of your design. That is because each piece cannot be exactly reproduced, thanks to the individual markings, knots and grain of the wood itself. Each little difference is like a beauty mark for the piece.

There is real elegance in a piece of furniture that has a history. Like the days past when furniture was passed down as an heirloom, reclaimed wood pieces can become just that in your family. Treated with respect, used with love, reclaimed wood furniture has a style on its own.
