An Oasis For Mom

Is there a mom out there who doesn’t crave a space she can call her own?

Virginia Woolf said it all when she stated: “a woman must have money and a room of her own…” She was referring to women who want to write fiction.  I don’t want to write fiction but I do want a space where I can read, think, do crossword puzzles, anything… just so long as, once in a while, I don’t have to hear: “MOOOOOM!” I also want a door that locks. Just me? I didn’t think so.

In reality, we can’t all have ‘a room of one’s own’ but you can certainly make a room your own and a good option is the bedroom. Your own little mom cave where you can sit after the kids have gone to bed and enjoy the peace and quiet.

No matter what your style preference is for your bedroom, we can all agree that it needs to whisper ‘calm’ to you. We’ve outlined a few different options to suit different spaces here for you to peruse, dream about, and … make happen!

Mom Oasis Style #1: When Space Is At A Premium

Not every bedroom has room for a chaise longue for you to drape yourself on, arm thrown back in dramatic woe (does anyone do that anymore?) so the key to a making a smaller space dreamy is to have the perfect bed.

A sleigh bed is the epitome of cozy and romantic. Imagine it covered with 300 count sheets, a half a dozen pillows and a luxurious cashmere throw. A quick visit to your local linen store can have you well on your way to cozy.

!nspire tip: The key to a zen feeling in the bedroom is muted tones. If you start splashing vibrant purples and eye popping reds everywhere, you might find yourself feeling less relaxed than you would like.

Mom Oasis Style #2: When You Have A Little More Space

Having a place to read that isn’t your bed is ideal. A small sofa or a comfortable chair with an ottoman are lovely additions to any larger spaced room. Depending on the style of your room, a fabric wing back or a stylish faux-leather might be the ticket.

Add a side table for your cup of tea and some decent floor lighting for reading and you will complete the area beautifully.

Mom Oasis Style #3: Style For A Suite

The perfect mom oasis would include a beautiful bed, vanity, dresser, and seating area. Not unlike this Erika bed with gorgeous, warm accessories and lighting.

An even more impressive transformation would be to include transformations to make the closet of your dreams. Are you all about shoes? Handbags? Clothes and more clothes?

We’d like to believe that we could all have this:

But just in case that isn’t entirely realistic, you can still give yourself a sense of luxury without winning the lottery.

Focus on elements that are important: lighting, mirrors and cupboards / shoe racks. With these in place, even a small closet can be manageable and organized.

*  A hanging lightbulb is not attractive: place some lighting in the closet that is more muted. You can get motion sensor LED lights that will flick on when the door is opened.

*  Add a mirror or two to create a usable space for trying clothes combinations or for that last check before dashing out the door.

*  Racks, drawers, and even the back of the door can become an ideal space for a hanging shoe rack. Maximize the internal space that is available with closet organizers and hooks for bags and scarves.

Whatever the size of your oasis, it needs to be entirely comfortable, calming and cozy.

P.S. Don’t forget the lock.
